We are so excited to bring forth a new funding paradigm for technical innovation and basic research. It is a resource we’ve dreamed about in the abstract for decades. It is a resource we’ve needed ourselves countless times in the past when brainstorming about world-changing technology ideas. But as with many of you, our dreams met with the unforgiving reality of how to secure funding to build a prototype, start a company, and launch cool technology.

Invariably the dreaded “B” word would come up – bootstrapping. Bootstrapping certainly has its virtues; you gradually build a company and work on the project over a long period of time, sometimes using the revenue of another business to fund the start-up. The problem with this start-up model is it is frustratingly long and painful. Many give up before the product sees the light of day.

Venture capital people will advise you to go to “friends and family” for your seed round, but what if your friends and family have no money to invest in your hot idea? What comes next is the familiar maxing-out-the-credit-card model of financing your technology ideas. We don’t even need to explore the reasons why this is a recipe for failure.
